California Sober: Research Indicates Cannabis Could Help Cutting Down Alcohol Intake

Emerging scientific investigation published in the prestigious psychiatry journal proposes that adopting a “California sober” approach could significantly help individuals reduce their drink use.

Research Methodology and Bar Lab Setting

Researchers from Brown University carried out a unique experiment where participants received marijuana joints to smoke before visiting a carefully constructed “bar lab”.

  • Subjects could choose to consume up to 8 mini alcoholic beverages.
  • The trial was repeated three separate times with different tetrahydrocannabinol levels: high potency, 3.1%, and a 0.03% marijuana.

Great care was taken to mimic a real-life bar environment, complete with low light and beer taps to ensure subject authenticity.

“We wanted to make sure that when given the opportunity, you would be highly motivated to consume alcohol,” explained the principal investigator.

Significant Results and Effects on Drinking

Results showed a marked reduction in alcohol intake after participants smoked cannabis:

  • Alcohol intake fell by nineteen percent after consuming moderate-THC marijuana.
  • The drop was even more pronounced with 7.2% THC cannabis, leading to a twenty-seven percent reduction versus the control.

Broader Context and Additional Studies

Increased legalization has driven a major surge in cannabis usage, which has doubled over the last ten years.

Meanwhile, alcohol use is at a historic low, with numerous individuals opting for alternatives like marijuana.

Crucial to note that forty percent of trial participants were diagnosed with alcohol dependence.

Although marijuana might be a possible alternative to heavy alcohol use, scientists warn that more research is required.

“It is premature to advise people in treatment for alcohol, ‘Proceed and substitute cannabis, and it will be effective for you,’” a study author commented.
