One teenage boy was discovered deceased only a few days following being falsely blamed of taking the cremated remains of a dead infant during a break-in, a coroner's inquiry has learned.

Tragic Discovery

Kai Lloyd's mother and father found his body in his room at his Connah's Quay home on November 19th, 2021.

False Allegations Begin

The inquest heard how his parent got a message on November 8th, 2021 via social media, from a woman asking if her son was her offspring. The communication added: "Inform him appreciation for breaking into my apartment."

In a statement read to the proceedings, the mother said the woman had been in the media, asserting her baby's ashes had been taken in a break-in - a allegation which was untrue.

Police Inquiry

An official inquiry from authorities later determined the supposed burglary victim had "provided false information" and "it now appears that the property was never stolen in the beginning".

Media reports about the alleged taken ashes attracted online responses, and although the teenager was not named in the posts, his parent said individuals "understood it was him".

The "online posts were really distressing", she said.

Emotional Health Impact

She added that her son had been identified with moderate ADHD, and as part of that disorder, other peoples' opinions really mattered to him.

"This must have hurt him deeply," she said, "particularly when this was not true".

Kai was detained at his residence, but nothing was discovered. He was transported to a police station and later freed under investigation.

Authorities said they would be in touch, the inquest heard, but had not contacted the relatives by the time of his passing.

Isolation and Worry

His parent said Kai "became isolated" after the detention and "would keep asking me whether I had heard anything from the authorities", because his condition meant sometimes "certain periods could seem like days".

When she talked to him about the supposed incident, she said her son told her he had entered the residence because the resident who lived there had said he could utilize the bathroom whenever he needed, but denied removing anything.

Digital Harassment

In a combined testimony between her and her spouse, the mother said her child was being harassed digitally after the accusations.

The inquest learned that one young adult urged the teenager to kill himself.

She had no worries on the night before he died, explaining how she had heard him "laughing and joking".

She portrayed him as a "compassionate, loving" boy, and said her "relatives is totally shattered".

He had been "obviously concealing his concerns", she stated, adding that he could not bear to have anyone "think bad of him".

School Reaction

The inquest heard from educational personnel at the local secondary school.

On November 8th, she "overheard some boys talking that the student had been detained and that was the first I learned".

"He told me... he'd done nothing wrong," she added.

After the discussion, the staff member said she rang the family's parents' telephone and provided a voicemail saying she had communicated to Kai about the accusations.

The proceedings heard his parents said they never got that message.

Formal Finding

Senior investigator told the inquest he would wait for documents regarding what improvements had been made to handling suspects with the condition, before deciding whether he should make a avoidance of future fatalities report.

Providing a narrative finding, he stated: "Approximately 8 November 2021, unsubstantiated allegations were made against Kai Benjamin Lloyd, a young child.

"Likely falsehoods were subsequently exaggerated and amplified through the platform of social media.

"On November 11th, he was questioned by the authorities and after his questioning he was released whilst investigations proceeded."

The official determined: "Exists no proof that the acts or omissions of any agency caused or contributed to his death and although it was the result of a personal action it is not possible to determine his intent."
